Bio

Hello! My name is Genevieve Cruz and I will be your science teacher this academic school year. I am the eldest of seven siblings: one sister and five brothers. Born in San Antonio, I am a rare native Texan. Because my father retired from the Air Force, I've had the fortunate experience of travelling to several states and countries and participating in multi-cultural traditions. Teaching is a highly respected and time honored profession in my community. I come from a family of teachers (My father and Aunts taught and retired from the Edgewood Independent school district where I started my career.) I am my nieces’ and nephews’ favorite Aunt because I get to do the “fun” stuff like movies, eating out and bowling with them. The dreams and expectations I have for them are the same shared dreams and expectations I have for my students.

Because I am a cancer survivor, I teach with compassion, intensity and urgency. I grew up with a strong middle class work ethic and I expect students to invest time, effort and self to becoming well rounded, science informed individuals/citizens. I expect excellence and one’s best efforts. It is my intent to provide a myriad of learning opportunities which I hope will enrich and empower life long learners. Our children need to be prepared for a workforce with unique skill sets which may not even exist yet. So, to meet the challenges of our new millennium, just the minimum or learning content is not enough. Our children must be able to problem solve, innovate, apply , and creatively view our ever changing universe. Leaders not only in their learning or in their chosen professions but also within our communities and dare say I, the world. Given today's tough economy with high unemployment rates - moral resolve, persistence and hard work will help lift all to a deserved quality of life. Regardless of what it is we do, there is value, virtue and dignity in an honest job well done.

Many successful McCollum Alumni return because of strong shared experiences and enduring relationships. Traditions and nostalgic reunions recount fond memories, celebrate life milestones and achievements and renew our community’s resolve and value in family, accomplishment, leadership and service. A legacy of success and self fulfillment are evident in our thriving graduates who continue to become active community servant leaders. I am priviliged to work with you. I look forward to making new memories, while sharing positive and meaningful learning experiences and celebrating accomplishments well earned.

LET EACH OF US – ALL OF US MAKE A DIFFERENCE! GO COWBOYS!

IF YOU'RE NOT INTO TEAM SPORTS, MAYBE ACADEMIC COMPETITION IS YOUR CUP OF TEA! IT'S BEEN A FEW YEARS SINCE OUR  U.I.L. SCIENCE ACADEMIC TEAM HAS ADVANCED TO REGIONAL AND STATE COMPETITION. WE CAN BE TRUE CONTENDERS THIS YEAR BUT WE NEED FOUR RESPONSIBLE, STRONG INDEPENDENT LEARNERS WHO WILL ENJOY LEARNING AND TAKING BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS TESTS. LET'S PLAN TO MEET AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK. AGAIN, OPEN ANNOUNCEMENTS WILL BE MADE SOON AFTER THE 2014-2015 U.I.L. COMPETITION SCHEDULE IS PUBLISHED.

Supply List

                                                                                Books

LIKE A PLUMBER OR ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT, YOU WILL NEED TO BRING YOUR OWN SUPPLIES IN ORDER FOR YOU TO DO YOUR JOB AND COMPLETE TASKS AT HAND - LIKE HOMEWORK, PROJECTS AND DAILY ASSIGNMENTS.

WHEN YOU COME TO CLASS YOU SHOULD HAVE: PENS (BLUE OR BLACK), PENCILS (#2), LOOSE LEAF/LINED NOTEBOOK PAPER, 2 INCH BINDER, DIVIDERS W/ POCKETS, COLOR PENCILS/MARKERS. AND 2 - 4 SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS.

IN ADDITION YOU MAY WANT TO INVEST IN A SCIENTIFIC GRAPHING CALCULATOR. THE SAT/ACT AND ACCULPLACER TESTS ALLOW TI-84 (BUT THE MEMORIES MUST BE ERASED BEFORE TESTING). OUR MATH CLASSES HAVE TI-84s. UNFORTUNATELY, NOT ALL OUR PHYSICS CLASSES HAVE  A SET OF THESE SO WE MAY BE USING  TI-30X SCIENTIFIC CALCULATORS IN CLASS.

WE WILL BE COMPLETING PROJECT/S EVERY SIX WEEKS GRADING PERIOD. SOME OF THE MATERIALS WE WILL BE USING INCLUDE: A PORTABLE STORAGE DEVICE (SUCH AS A THUMB/FLASH DRIVE) FOR PREZI'S AND POWERPOINTS, WHITE OR COLOR INDEX CARDS, GLUE, WOODEN POPSICLE STICKS, EMPTY PLASTIC SODA BOTTLES, PLASTIC STRAWS, POSTERS (SINGLE & TRIFOLD),

SOME OF OUR LABS AND PROJECTS WILL BE WEB BASED. SO IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO A COMPUTER AND INTERNET AT HOME, PLEASE  PLAN AHEAD AND MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO GO TO THE BIBILOTECH, MISSION REACH, PAN AMERICAN OR PALO ALTO LIBRARIES. KINDLY LET THE  LIBRARIAN KNOW YOU ARE DOING ACADEMIC WORK AND NOT PLAYING GAMES. ALTHOUGH TIME LIMITS MAY BE POSTED, THEY WILL MONITOR YOUR SITES TO ASSURE THAT YOU ARE MAKING PROGRESS. DEPENDING ON THE PUBLIC DEMAND ON THE ELECTRONIC RESOURCES, THEY MAY EXTEND YOUR ACCESS TIME. (ANOTHER REASON TO PRACTICE TIME MANAGEMENT).
